About Samaj Te Patrakar

SD College Educational Society takes out a weekly newspaper ‘Samaj Te Patrakar’ in association with the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. This newspaper is being taken out every week without any break ever since its first publication on 13 April 2013. The main purpose of this newspaper is to provide practical exposure to the students of Journalism and Mass Communication. Jagir Singh Jagtar, a renowned journalist of the region, is the present Editor of Samaj Te Patrakar. This newspaper has the distinction of being the only newspaper which is taken out by an educational institution in Punjab. The newspaper has circulation of 1500 copies. It is not only widely circulated but also reaches the prominent personalities, universities and schools of Punjab along with universities of other states. Students of Journalism and Mass Communication help the faculty in news coverage as well as in newspaper preparation. The team-staff includes Sh. Jagir Singh Jagtar, Editor, Dr. Tarspal Kaur, Co-Editor, Prof. Gurparvesh Singh, Head of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Sub-Editor of the newspaper, Prof. Shoaib Zafar, Adm. Incharge of the newspaper, Sh. Amritpal Singh, Composer/Typist, Prof. Lakhvir Singh, Prof. Amandeep Kaur, Assistant Professors, Department of B.Voc.(JMT). This newspaper is being published in Punjabi, the vernacular language of Punjab. The students are encouraged to publish their own articles in the newspaper giving them an insight into the process of creating a newspaper and also making them realize the importance of being a responsible citizen. The teachers of the institution also contribute in this newspaper through their articles, features and columns. Samaj Te Patrakar is always dedicated to highlight the local issues of importance which are often ignored by the big media houses or other main stream media.
